A painted grate can t be used as a fire and is not authentic use a spray paint if you re not precious about getting the same colour as a wall or woodwork paint to help preserve the fireplace s detail. Any gaps in the paper will get spray paint in it so take your time on this step. Other applications include fireplace screens wood stoves boilers and steam pipes. The best approach really is to clean the grates and understand that a little wear and tear are natural and do not generally impact performance.
